How to Measure Your Joint

Length.
Measure the total linear feet of every joint you're sealing. Add each run together — five 20-ft windows is 100 linear feet, not 20.
Width.
Measure across the gap at its widest point. If the joint varies, use the widest measurement so you don't come up short.
Depth.
This is how deep the sealant sits in the joint, not how deep the gap goes. For joints deeper than 1/2", install backer rod and measure from the rod to the surface.
Waste factor.
10% covers normal tooling and cut-off on most jobs. Bump to 15–20% for irregular joints, rough substrates, or crews new to the product.

How many linear feet does a tube of caulk cover?

It depends entirely on joint size. A 10.1 oz cartridge covers roughly 24 linear feet at 1/4" × 1/4", 12 feet at 1/2" × 1/4", and only 3 feet at 1" × 1/2". Use the calculator above to get the exact figure for your joint dimensions.

What is the ideal joint depth for sealant?

Depth should be half the width — a depth-to-width ratio of 1:2. So a 1/2"-wide joint should be filled to 1/4" deep. This geometry gives the sealant bead maximum flexibility and lets it handle joint movement without tearing.

Do I need backer rod?

Yes, for any joint deeper than 1/2". Backer rod limits how deep the sealant penetrates so you hit the right depth-to-width ratio, prevents three-sided adhesion (which restricts movement and causes early failure), and reduces material use. Closed-cell foam backer rod is standard for most exterior applications.
